INTELLIGENCE vs EMOTIONS: & its impact on the INFORMATION SYSTEMS
So......and........So once again; the topic into which I will be digging is like a multi-faceted diamond. There are lots of aspects, literally a lots, which I had listed out .But I will be discussing only a few of them.
Intelligence can be broadly classified into - Visual / Spatial Intelligence, Musical Intelligence, Verbal/Linguistic Intelligence, Logical/Mathematical Intelligence, Interpersonal Intelligence, Intrapersonal Intelligence, and Bodily / Kinesthetic Intelligence. This was the definition given by Howard Gardner, a psychologist who is based at Harvard Graduate School of Education. Gardner first laid out the theory of multiple intelligences (MI) in his book Frames of Mind. Since the publication of Frames of Mind, Gardner has additionally identified an 8th dimension of intelligence: Naturalist Intelligence, and is still considering a possible ninth: Existentialist Intelligence.
Similarly, emotions can be classified into thankfulness, envy, disgust, worry, kindheartedness, stress, boredom, sadness, loneliness, bravery, paranoia, optimism, stubbornness, fear and anxiety.
According to American Heritage Dictionary, the few definitions of Psychology are -
1.The science that deals with mental processes and behavior.
2.The emotional and behavioral characteristics of an individual, a group, or an activity.
So, based on the above two definitions of intelligence and emotions; we will discuss how their symbiotic relationship HAS or HAS NOT a direct impact on the INFORMATION SYSTEMS.
Interaction design is a very important part of information systems by which every moment of every day, millions of people send email, talk on mobile phones, instant message each other, record TV shows with TiVo, and listen to music on their ipods. All of these things are made possible by good engineering (INTELLECT).
We benefit from good interaction design when we -
1.Go to an automatic teller machine(ATM) and withdraw cash in a few simple touches of the screen.
2.Become engrossed in a computer game.
3.Share photos on the Web.
4.Text message a friend from the mobile phone.
5.Are treated quickly and well in an emergency room.
Result - Thankfulness, Kindheartedness, Optimism etc (EMOTION).
Consider the responses of the above 5 cases in another way due to poor interaction design or as a result of improper timing -
1.ATM machine fails or you have exceeded the limit of your credit/debit card.
2.The game stops when you are at the finishing stage with no reason at all.
3.The photos are not at all visible at the other end.
4.Message is not at all delivered.
5.Treatment delayed due to emergency room suffering due to power failure and negligent staff.
Result - Worry, Sadness, Fear, Stress, Anxiety, Disgust etc (EMOTION).
Thus INTELLIGENCE and EMOTIONS, definitely have a deep impact on INFORMATION SYSTEMS.
Consider a product say X ,wherein celebrities are used to market them. The advertisement is high budgeted. The product is mostly marketed by top celebrity, supermodel etc. The advertisement is shot in a very amiable place. How many of us resist to buy such products? Not many. How many of us think very intelligently every time before buying the product X? Not many!!How much percent does the company achieves profit in the process of fooling the customers?Pretty much 100%.
In relation to the above example, but not in any way related to the Information Systems - How many people don't know that smoking cigarette is injurious to health? Pretty much everybody knows that. But how many of the people resist smoking?I have seen a few shops where the month, date and the year calender is used to qualify a person to smoke. How disgusting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Coming back to the Information System, I will speak something about the funky looking websites. Suppose that a novice is on the verge of learning more about browsing features, more about websites. But the user unintentionally clicks on a webpage that is powerfully infected with viruses, adware, spyware etc. The moment he or she clicks the website, a message appears - "Congratulations!Your computer will be usable no more!!!!!!!"Imagine the plight of that user who has very important data stored in it. He will be completely broken into pieces.
It is clear from the above two cases that how emotions are used to mislead the intellect.
If some software named X is installed on your personal computer. The owner of the X claims that the software is very easy to use on the basis of which you buy the software. But Oh!!My goodness. When the application is opened, it is found that the menu bar is indexed improperly. All the items from the drop down list appear simultaneusly on the screen and the user is baffeled at the appearence itself. This implies the poor usability of software. The software being easy is an intellectual part. But the appearence of the application scares the user and makes the application to look not only difficult but very difficult and boring.
Such is the power of emotion. It can make or mar in its entirity. In the above example, the user ran away not because of his lack of intellect but due to the fear of coping up with so many functions. That is why the software companies, use a drop down list in the menu bar and display the functions as and when required.
Consider the large scale shopping website like amazon.com. How nicely the company has developed a website. It is a very good example of Global Navigation system. It has a very well developed site map...right!!!!!!!!
How do you feel here?Very nice. Thankful to the designer of the web-site.Relaxed..etc...(Emotions)And you go on adding items one after the other to your cart after deciding about the item(Intellect).
In the same context as above, but consider a hypothetical scenario where amazon neither has a good navigation system nor has a proper site map system developed. You are completely lost within the website. All items are disaplayed in a random sequence. Visual effect is improper. My question is, even if we get close to the item, would we ever think of buying it?
Never!Never!Never!!!!!!We will never think of buying(Intellect) the items from a website wherein we experience the feelings of discomfort, anguish, pessimism etc.
Thus emotions can be used to goad the proper use of intellect and a very high efficiency or the human output can be obtained. It can be envisioned that emotions and intellect are like the salt and the food; which cannot be separated and if at all they are separated, it might lead to the poor taste of the USER for whom that paricular Information System is designed.
Can a line be drawn between Intellect and Emotions?
For this I would like to give a very simple example. I will use the example of online dating websites. How many of the people in the world are ready to fall in love? Mostly a lot of them. They go to the dating websites, find their partners, date with them. After a few days they come to know that they cannot get along very well. She tells him that it will be their last day today and he agrees to it(Intellect). But after a few days he again tries to find about her whereabouts. He tries to contact her.She doesn't respond and misbehaves but she still likes him(Emotions). As the time goes on, both of them get engaged to some other person, but still have a strong lingering about their past.
In this way emotions have a very very powerful place. From the above example if we try to analyze, how much mental disturbance would the couple have incurred during the entire process. Intellect just said that we cannot stay together but emotion was coaxing them time and again that did you do the right thing?
Just by saying NO, doing unjust work, trying to put other people down, voluntarily harming others are nothing but exaggerated form of Intellect which sometimes is referred to as, Maring of Consciousness or controlling emotions. The offender or the doer knows that he is wrong, but by the use of his intellect controls his emotions while committing himself to the above wrong doings. The result is nothing but unpeaceful life.
Thus I would like to finally conclude that emotions and intelligence are inseparable. They cannot be separated or cannot be partitioned. If at all it is shown separated for any purpose, it is nothing but a transitory separation..................
